Free Wii SiimpleSynth 2.0!

By Yann | July 3, 2008

Hot on the heels of Monday’s Loop Machine 2.1 update, today I’ve finished the Free SiimpleSynth version 2.0 for Wiimote!
The SiimpleSynth 2.0 from The Amazing Rolo

It’s way cooler than version 1.0, I have to say. It looks nicer, for one thing, and now uses Filter Modulation to let you make some really wacky sounds just by moving the Wiimote. It has two envelopes, presets, three different triggering modes, and lots more. You can really spend a lot of time with it, and it’s really versatile! All this for the low low price of free! Mac OS X only, for the moment.

Click here to download the Wii Siimple Synth 2.0!

Also, it looks like there was a small bug in the full (non-demo) version of the Loop Machine 2.1 that I released on monday - you may have noticed that the header logo in the main window was gone! I’ve fixed it now, so download it again if that bothers you! It doesn’t effect performance at all, just the good looks…

make make make

By Yann | May 23, 2008

There is some chatter around and about the interwebs that seems to imply that the Loop Machine is featured in the upcoming issue of MAKE Magazine. You may recall that they are old friends of mine…it’s pretty exciting to make it to the print version, though!

Apparently they talk a lot about the old version 1.1.1, which can be found on the download page for free, and remember there is a free demo of version 2.0.

Speaking of the Wiimote and MAKE magazine, this is a pretty cool creative visual idea for the Wii, from the recent NYU ITP degree show. Thanks for the link, Deborah!

(also, look out for a Loop Machine article in Develop, and a little bird told me that version 2.1 is just around the corner!)

Some press

By Yann | April 30, 2008

Looking good, there, RoloIt looks like there’s a big article in The Independent today about independent Wii developers, featuring the Loop Machine (and fellow Tartan Johnny Chung Lee)! I haven’t seen it yet, but supposedly there’s a big picture of me in the print version. How do I look? [edit: not so bad!]

In a strange and amazing coincidence, there is also an an article in the same issue about my brother Cory and his band the Groanbox Boys, which mentions me as well. We get around, don’t we?

New Forum

By Yann | April 8, 2008

I know many people were having trouble registering and posting on the old forum. I’m sorry about that, but I’m happy to say that I’ve just finished off a brand-new Loop Machine Forum! It should be easy to register and start posting right away. In particular I would love to see more videos and music by you Loop Machine users out there!

So go and check it out! See you there!

Also, I’ve learned that PayPal doesn’t let the residents of some countries send payments. Thanks to Jan from Serbia for pointing that out to me. I’ve set up a Moneybookers account, which works with pretty much any country, so if anyone has any trouble buying the Loop Machine 2 just send me an email at rolo@theamazingrolo.net to work out another solution.

New free software

By Yann | April 1, 2008

I’ve gotten some really great feedback about the Loop Machine 2 lately. There have been a few specific suggestions for a some features, and some of these have given me some great ideas! One of these ideas came from a music student named Sam from Syndney, who wanted to be able to use the Wii to manipulate his friend’s trumpet playing in real time. Now he can! Introducing the Maniipulator! Maniipulator Screenshot With the Maniipulator, you can take live sound and manipulate it wirelessly and in real time by dancing around with your Wii controller. It works with any audio signal, from your built-in microphone, line in, or external sound card. It features similar effects that can be found on the Loop Machine 2, such as the Multi-Tap Delay and Modulator, as well as a Sampler (based on the Loop Machine Granulator), Filter, and Volume control. I should also add that the Maniipulator, just like the Siimple Synth, can be used in conjunction with the Loop Machine 2, by using two controllers.

Download it now!

These features, and many more that others have suggested, will be a part of the Loop Machine 2.1, which will be released towards the end of April. Keep those comments coming! Finally, you may have noticed that there is now a Loop Machine Facebook Group! Please join and say hello! More exciting news to follow in the next few days…

Wii Hacker Interview

By Yann | March 9, 2008

This week on the MAKE Blog (old friends of the Loop Machine)is an interview with Masayuki Akamatsu. He’s the guy who made the aka.wiiremote object for Max/MSP that I used to make the Loop Machine. He has done a lot of work hacking things from the iPhone to the sudden motion sensors on laptops, and his Wii remote objects are top notch. In the interview he says some stuff about the Wii and Max/MSP that I definitely agree with!

First off, with the iPhone, Wii, Roomba, etc., I think it’s important to note that these products are well-made in the first place. If it’s a good product, then the product also has an advantage in that it can be made cheaply through the efficiency of high-volume mass production. In the case of the Wii Remote, in addition to having a lot of features, its price was such that people felt free to try it out, and as a result it was widely noticed by a lot of people. Conversely, gadgets that from the onset have been open source and hackable have not been as big of a success as the Wii Remote. The sole fact that something is "open" is not what’s important, there has to be some kind of attraction that makes a thing worth hacking in the first place.

Well said, Masayuki.
