Some press
By Yann | April 30, 2008
It looks like there’s a big article in The Independent today about independent Wii developers, featuring the Loop Machine (and fellow Tartan Johnny Chung Lee)! I haven’t seen it yet, but supposedly there’s a big picture of me in the print version. How do I look?
In a strange and amazing coincidence, there is also an an article in the same issue about my brother Cory and his band the Groanbox Boys, which mentions me as well. We get around, don’t we?

New Forum
By Yann | April 8, 2008
I know many people were having trouble registering and posting on the old forum. I’m sorry about that, but I’m happy to say that I’ve just finished off a brand-new Loop Machine Forum! It should be easy to register and start posting right away. In particular I would love to see more videos and music by you Loop Machine users out there!
So go and check it out! See you there!
Also, I’ve learned that PayPal doesn’t let the residents of some countries send payments. Thanks to Jan from Serbia for pointing that out to me. I’ve set up a Moneybookers account, which works with pretty much any country, so if anyone has any trouble buying the Loop Machine 2 just send me an email at rolo@theamazingrolo.net to work out another solution.

New free software
By Yann | April 1, 2008
I’ve gotten some really great feedback about the Loop Machine 2 lately. There have been a few specific suggestions for a some features, and some of these have given me some great ideas! One of these ideas came from a music student named Sam from Syndney, who wanted to be able to use the Wii to manipulate his friend’s trumpet playing in real time. Now he can! Introducing the Maniipulator!
With the Maniipulator, you can take live sound and manipulate it wirelessly and in real time by dancing around with your Wii controller. It works with any audio signal, from your built-in microphone, line in, or external sound card. It features similar effects that can be found on the Loop Machine 2, such as the Multi-Tap Delay and Modulator, as well as a Sampler (based on the Loop Machine Granulator), Filter, and Volume control. I should also add that the Maniipulator, just like the Siimple Synth, can be used in conjunction with the Loop Machine 2, by using two controllers.
These features, and many more that others have suggested, will be a part of the Loop Machine 2.1, which will be released towards the end of April. Keep those comments coming! Finally, you may have noticed that there is now a Loop Machine Facebook Group! Please join and say hello! More exciting news to follow in the next few days…

Wii Hacker Interview
By Yann | March 9, 2008
This week on the MAKE Blog (old friends of the Loop Machine)is an interview with Masayuki Akamatsu. He’s the guy who made the aka.wiiremote object for Max/MSP that I used to make the Loop Machine. He has done a lot of work hacking things from the iPhone to the sudden motion sensors on laptops, and his Wii remote objects are top notch. In the interview he says some stuff about the Wii and Max/MSP that I definitely agree with!
First off, with the iPhone, Wii, Roomba, etc., I think it’s important to note that these products are well-made in the first place. If it’s a good product, then the product also has an advantage in that it can be made cheaply through the efficiency of high-volume mass production. In the case of the Wii Remote, in addition to having a lot of features, its price was such that people felt free to try it out, and as a result it was widely noticed by a lot of people. Conversely, gadgets that from the onset have been open source and hackable have not been as big of a success as the Wii Remote. The sole fact that something is "open" is not what’s important, there has to be some kind of attraction that makes a thing worth hacking in the first place.
Well said, Masayuki.

Loop Machine v1 sources!
By Yann | February 13, 2008
I’m sorry for the lack of posts over the last few weeks, I’m currently in Paris doing original music and sound design for a play called “Ces murs qui nous écoutent” (”These Walls are Listening” or “The Walls Have Ears”). I’ll have more details about that next week, hopefully including videos. I’m even going to be using some fun Wii stuff on stage!
Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered to beta test the Loop Machine 2.0. I’m working on all of the feedback that I’ve received, so I’m sorry to say that the beta testing is now closed.
However, I’m happy to announce that anyone can now download the source code for version 1.1.1! It was made in Max/MSP, a graphical programming interface by Cycling 74. If you don’t have it you can download a 30 day demo to try it out.
So here it is: Download and explore, and let me know if you come up with anything interesting. It is released under a Creative Commons License.
Also, thank you to everyone who has sent me music and videos of the software in action, I hope to post some of those up in the next few days. I know people have been having trouble registering for the forum, so I’ll try and get that worked out soon.

Loop Machine in action
By Yann | January 30, 2008
This week I got some really cool emails from people around the world using the Loop Machine. First up, the incomparable Nick Janaway, who is lucky enough to be an official Beta Tester for the Wii Loop Machine 2.0, sent me an epic 10 minute jam out session! I edited it down to five minutes or so, but give it a listen for some crazy glitchy IDM style action:
Nick Janaway - Loop Machine v2.0 demo
I also got a great mp3 from Lithuanian graphic designer Dimako. He sent this funky jungle electro mix made with the Loop Machine v1.1.1:
Dimako - Loop MAchine v1.1.1 demo
I love getting these things, so send mp3s or videos of yourself using the Loop Machine or post them on the Forum.
Also, are you interested in Beta Testing v2.0? Send me an email or leave a comment, telling me your OS version and computer type.

WLM2 Sampler demo
By Yann | January 22, 2008
The upcoming Wii Loop Machine v2.0 can do sampling! It’s loads of fun, as you can see from this video:
See it on Vimeo or YouTube, or download for iPod or iPhone.
You’ll also notice that I’m now testing on Leopard…it works great, but don’t worry if you’re still on 10.4 it works fine there too!
